How did John Rensenbrink die?
The co-founder of the Green Party of the United States, political scientist, and conservationist John Rensenbrink, has passed away. He was 93 years old. He died in hospice with his family by his side, according to the Green Party of Canada’s official account of events. Rensenbrink died on July 30, according to an obituary in the Bangor Daily News.
The Green Party said in a statement that Rensenbrink helped organize the first Green Party gathering in the United States, held in Maine in 1984. Members of the Maine Green Independent Party credited him for his help to form the state’s first Green Party, the Maine Green Party, which is now known as the Maine Green Independent Party.
About John Rensenbrink
For decades, Rensenbrink lectured political philosophy and history at Bowdoin College in Maine. Frustrated with the Democratic Party, he helped form the new political party in an effort to promote world peace and environmental protection. Those who knew him best, including current and former Green Party members, praised him for his persistent activism and vital role in the growth of the party’s organizing.
Rensenbrink “embodied the finest of American progressive politics,” government reform advocate Ralph Nader, who twice campaigned for president on a Green ticket, said in a statement. “Greens from the local to the national and international levels were inspired by John Rensenbrink.”
To a dairy farmer family, Rensenbrink was born in Pease. His degree from the University of Chicago was obtained in the 1960s, and he relocated to Maine.
When he ran for the Senate in 1996, he received roughly 4% of the vote in a race won by Republican Susan Collins. In addition, he was elected as the first co-chair of the Maine Green Party, according to a statement from the state party.
As a co-chair of the Maine Green Independent Party today, Fred McCann said, “He not only revolutionized third-party politics in the United States, but he also showed us how to recontextualize our views of ourselves outside conventional systems of politics and economics.”
Rensenbrink’s obituary notes a memorial event will be held in September.
