The death news of Jimmie Lou Fisher is everywhere on the internet she is Arkansas’ oldest state representative and a trailblazing female politician. Her recent death made headlines as she died after living a long life of 8 decades. She was admitted to a medical center after suffering health issues. 

The Arkansas Democratic Party said on Twitter that the state has lost a “genuine legend.”

“Her elegance, generosity, and passion made our party and our state a better place to live,” according to the message.

On December 31, 1941, she was born.  She is a former basketball player who is now an educator. she later served as a high school coach. She was one of five siblings. As her father worked as a school superintendent, the family relocated to five locations in Greene and Faulkner counties.

Fisher began her political career as Greene County treasurer in 1970, although her relationship and partnership with youthful Bill Clinton during his congressional race in 1974 established her statewide political career.

Her final campaign began in 2002 after Democratic Party leaders convinced her to win the state against popular Republican governor Mike Huckabee.  Despite being bankrolled and suffering from a debilitating back injury, she received 47 cents of the electorate.

Additional accolades arrived from elected figures across both sides of the political aisle.

“Jimmie Lou Fisher never met a stranger, and she was a friend to so many in our state,” said Lottie Shackelford, former mayor of Little Rock said in a post.

Shackelford wrote in a post “She was a dedicated and diligent trailblazer who never gave up on making Arkansas a better place.” I will miss her warmth, wisdom, and friendship. She grounded me, our party, and our politics in so many ways, and we are all better for having known her and benefited from her public service. I’ll miss hearing her say, ‘Jimmie Lou Fisher from Greene County,’” she said.
