Garrett was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 2010 state election after winning a Labor endorsement to fight Brunswick’s growing marginal seat. Garrett became Minister of Emergency Services and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Alcohol Regulation in December 2014 following Labor’s return to government.
She resigned from the Andrews Ministry on June 9, 2016, following a bitter dispute over an enterprise bargaining agreement between the Country Fire Authority (CFA), the United Firefighters Union and the Victorian government, during which she publicly fell out with Premier Daniel Andrews.
