Who was murdered by Mark Gooch?
For the kidnapping and murder of Mennonite Sunday school teacher Sasha Krause in 2020, Mark Gooch is currently serving a life sentence.
Krause, the slain man, was a Mennonite from Farmington, New Mexico. In the middle of a January 2020 night of errand-running, he vanished without a trace.
Weeks passed before her body was discovered hundreds of miles away, making it difficult for detectives to piece together what had happened. An investigation determined that a man named Mark Gooch was responsible for her murder.
What happened to Sasha and how she ended up outside of Flagstaff, Arizona is detailed in “The Grudge,” a show on Investigation Discovery that was featured in “People Magazine Investigates.”
Wisconsin native and convicted killer Mark Gooch is currently being detained at the Eyman Browning Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence. The fact that Mark Gooch, Sasha Krause’s murderer, didn’t know her is the most disturbing aspect of the case.
How did Mark Gooch kill Sasha Krause?
In January of 2020, Gooch abducted Krause from her home in the Farmington area. He took her on a ride across southern Arizona and eventually left her off in a forest near Flagstaff. While she was helplessly bound, he aimed his weapon towards Sasha’s head and fired. Upon finding one month later, she was lying on her back with her hands taped together.
According to Oxygen, the prosecution claimed at trial that Gooch had a bias against the Mennonite faith. It has been said that Mark’s brother Samuel complained to the authorities about Mark’s dislike of Mennonites.
Mark’s surveillance of local Mennonites in Farmington was also demonstrated through a text message discussion with his brother, which took place days before the murder of Sasha. In addition, multiple witnesses stated that on January 18, 2020, they saw a white SUV parked near the Farmington Mennonite Church on the day that Krause disappeared.
On October 3, 2021, a jury in Arizona found Mark Gooch guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping. He received a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
Gooch received a five-year prison term for kidnapping, as well. Mark is still being held at the Eyman Browning Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence, Arizona, according to official prison records.
